synopsis
In a quiet European village where storks return every spring, two young birds, Clapper and Malena, grow up inseparable. Their first migration to Africa should mark the beginning of adulthood - but it ends in tragedy. Malena is shot by poachers and left behind, presumed dead. Clapper, forced by the ancient rule of the flock - the flock above all - continues south, carrying grief across continents.
Rescued by Pete, an elderly widower who nurses injured animals, Malena survives but loses the ability to fly. Grounded and dependent, she suppresses her instincts and slowly adapts to a life defined by limitation. Three springs later, Clapper returns only to descover his first love is alive - their reunion rekindles a love interrupted by fate.
But love alone cannot defy nature. Clapper is now leader of the flock, bound to guide them back to Africa. Malena cannot follow. As migration day approaches, he faces an impossible choice between instinct and devotion, freedom and belonging. Now, he belongs to the sky - and she to the earth.
Meanwhile, Herona - a heron once sheltered by Pete and now displaced by Malena’s return - becomes consumed by resentment. Manipulation and betrayal fracture the fragile reunion, forcing both lovers onto separate and dangerous paths.
Clapper’s journey south is fraught with peril - a sandstorm over the Sahara, crossing through a war zone in the Middle East, a deadly falcon attack over Egypt. After a crash landing on a desert island in the Red Sea, he meets Skyler, a swallow stranded far from home. After nearly losing hope of ever returning, the two form an unlikely friendship and continue the journey together. Meanwhile Malena confronts her own inner migration: from self-pity to strength. Along their journeys, both Malena and Clapper encounter unexpected allies, friendships, and dangers that transform them. In the face of natural forces and human cruelty, the film raises a simple but profound question: Is belonging defined by where we can go - or by whom we choose to return to?
WINGS is an emotionally grounded epic about love, courage, disability, loyalty, and the fragile bond between humans and wildlife. Rooted in a true story that captured international attention, the film combines the intimacy of rural Europe with the scale of transcontinental migration, positioning itself as an animated feature with global international resonance.
