Danny Drake is an up and coming superstar in country music. His mission is to save traditional country music. He feels part of that mission is living up to the standards of his idols like Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr. His personal life destroys his career and he's dropped by his record label. He begins wandering and drifting until he meets, by chance, another idol of his Jesse Dean. Jesse was a superstar country singer in the late '80's early '90's before he burned out. Jesse is a born again Christian and he sees the route Danny is on. He takes him under his wing but Danny is reluctant and is struggling with addiction. He finds a love interest with a local veterinarian who along with Jesse tries to help him put his life back together and salvage his career. He must also try to salvage his relationship with his family, deal with past unresolved traumas and upcoming twists he never saw coming.
